Men and women courageously exiting the underground of incarceration and addiction ALSO opens new horizons of possibility for their sons and daughters.

We invited our first applicants to write a short essay, answering, “How has your parent’s resurrection and change made college possible for you as a family?”

We asked the parents to write their own essay to go with it.

We are pleased to celebrate our Inaugural UM Scholarship Recipient, Alyssa Manrique!

Read her and her dad’s essays (at their eager suggestion!) below:

I’m proud to be my father’s daughter and I’m proud to be the first of our family to graduate high school.
I feel that this would not have been possible if I had not made the choice to stop living in chaos and putting my family through hell.
